South Wales Sports Grounds have constructed a number athletics facilities from 400m 8 lane tracks to sprint straights, long/triple jump run ups, hammer and discuss cages with much much more. We have ben involved in whole construction from earthworks to final client handover as well as track redevelopments, resurfacing and redesigns. Working along side athletics clubs, local councils and larger contractors we have managed the constructions of a variety of surfaces to the stringent World Athletics and UKA standards.
Athletics tracks presents one of the intricate installations in the sports industry with precision level accuracies and minute tolerances, the construction procedures need to be managed carefully with quality at the forefront of all involved. With investments in surveying equipment South Wales Sports Grounds can construct a multi lane World Athletics / UKA standard athletics facility to the fine requirements of the governing bodies to the needs and desires of the end users.
Athletics tracks have progressed significantly over the years with South Wales Sports Grounds original installation of ash, red-gra and gravel surfaces progressing to the more modern polymeric rubber surfaces. Through continued investment in technology, plant and machinery we are able to stay at the forefront of the construction market installing the latest surfaces and services wherever required.
Carmarthen athletics track in the heart of Carmarthen is home to a new state of the art athletics facility installed by South Wales Sports Grounds. The new track was a reconstruction and extension of the older 6 lane surface into a full 8 lane track with porous polymeric rubber. The added lanes gave the Leisure facility the potential for hosting school, county and higher-level competitions with the track certified to international competition with World Athletics and UKA accreditations.
South Wales Sports Grounds upgraded the track as well as repairing the underlying surfaces to comply with the latest standards. New field services were also installed with new floodlighting and timing systems, a World Athletics hammer/discuss cage, long/triple jump run up and pit, perimeter paths, internal football pitch, fencing and more. As part of the project South Wales Sports Grounds also resurfaced the tennis courts alongside and repaired parts of the Hockey pitch next door.
With the Leisure centre temporarily converted to a Covid-19 field hospital, the logistics of site management became the main challenge which SWSG stood up to. The organising of deliveries, road closures and all other site traffic was managed and communicated with NHS staff and the Leisure facilities management teams to enable a smooth and efficient construction period.
The track also boasts the Polytan SmartTrack system where you can use “digital performance diagnostics” to best analyse your competition and training. Through the use of timing gates set beneath the track’s surface, multiple users can link any mobile device to the SmartTrack system to gain precision diagnostics in all weather and at all times.

The Fitzalan High School project in Leckwith, Cardiff represented one of the largest in the company’s history. A project encompassing a multitude of surface types and construction methods the Fitzalan project showcased the variety and depth of knowledge we could carry out.
This development, on behalf of Kiers, included the construction of a Tier 1 hybrid surface, 3G FIFA Quality football pitch, 3G World Rugby pitch, 2G sand filled Multi Use Games Areas, full-size natural grass pitch and IAAF hammer throw cage and landing area. The project also includes the future construction of an FIH standard hockey surface, tarmac tennis courts and additional natural grass facilities all to be completed within the next year.
For all 7 pitches constructed we built bespoke drainage systems, perimeter fencing, tarmac paths, sports equipment, team shelters and floodlighting as well as the being the installers of the irrigation systems on the hybrid pitch and grandstand bases on the World Rugby 3G.
Alongside groundworks and landscaping contractors South Wales Sports Grounds managed pitch construction throughout the winter months for a phase 1 package completion in the summer of 2021 and handover to the client for use during the during construction of the new school.
The site is situated in a hub of sporting excellence in Leckwith, Cardiff, alongside Cardiff’s International Athletics Track which South Wales Sports Grounds redeveloped in 2019 as well as being alongside the existing Canton 3G and grass fields we constructed in 2016-2017 and Gol Centre Cardiff 5-a-side pitches, we resurfaced in 2020.
“Your teams’ collaboration, coordination and understanding of our requirements have been excellent. Nothing seems to be too much trouble and your team are truly client focused. The collaborative approach has been very refreshing especially with our programme issues in respect to delays to various pitches. Please on behalf of myself and the Kier Team thank your team for their efforts so far. May it long continue.”

Alongside the construction of a World Rugby and FIFA compliant 3G surface South Wales Sports Grounds (SWSG) werecommissioned to build a 400m 6 lane athletics track on the existing redgra area of Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive. The athletics track, built to encompass the newly installed 3G, will provide a training and competition surface for the school as well as the local community. Built with the subcontractor Polytan the surface also has the Polytan SmarTrack system enabling real-time timing and tracking using magnets laid beneath the surface. Users of the track can utilise this technology through an app on their phones to track their performance.
The athletics facility is built to the highest and latest technology in athletics surfaces and provides a fantastic asset to any school’s sportsday.
“The schools are delighted with their new sports facilities finished to an excellent standard and the care taken throughout the works to minimize any disruption to the school’s day to day running and at the same time ensuring the safety of the pupils. I would certainly recommend SWSG as a contractor on future projects”.
This project involved the removal and relay of the running track surface for Cardiff’s International athletics track in Leckwith. South Wales Sports Grounds (SWSG) removed the existing surface and regulated undulations in the base tarmac to ensure the surface’s compliance with the stringent IAAF specifications. Once the macadam was prepared, the subcontractor Polytan began works to relay the surface to a blue finish. Despite the typical South Wales rainy weather, the surface was completed to a great standard and now provides a facility for national and international competitions. The surface also has the Polytan SmarTrack system enabling real-time timing and tracking using magnets laid beneath the surface. Users of the track can utilise this technology through an app on their phones to track their performance to an unlimited extent, in all weather conditions and for various athletes at the same time.
