This project involved the removal and re-lay of the running track surface for Cardiff’s International Athletics Track in Leckwith. South Wales Sports Grounds (SWSG) removed the existing surface and regulated undulations in the base tarmac to ensure the surface’s compliance with the stringent IAAF specifications. Once the macadam was prepared, the subcontractor Polytan began works to re-lay the surface to a blue finish. Despite the typical South Wales rainy weather, the surface was completed to a great standard and now provides a facility for national and international competitions. The surface also has the Polytan SmarTrack system enabling real-time timing and tracking using magnets laid beneath the surface. Users of the track can utilise this technology through an app on their phones to track their performance to an unlimited extent, in all weather conditions and for various athletes at the same time.
